Classes at USSS

Our students try to concentrate on classes in order to be well-rounded sports specialists. Our first goal for student-athletes is to foster them as outstanding players, and our second goal is to provide them with sufficient academic knowledge for professional careers in the future. Afternoon and evening training sessions are tough and intensive. But likewise, in the morning, our faculty members instill in students a similar earnest attitude towards academics.

In addition to regular classes, USSS offers extra-curricular classes for students; that is, English classes every Tuesday and Thursday evening for student-athletes; and Korean, English, and Math classes for sports expert students every day. Through these extra-curricular classes, student-athletes can supplement their insufficient English learning time and knowledge. Also, students in the sports expert course can acquire a higher level of academic knowledge in preparation for university entrance exams.

Student-initiated Study Groups

Students in the sports expert course study with the goal of becoming global sports talent. All students in the sports expert course make groups for studying their academic subjects with their friends. During group study sessions, they learn to cooperate with each other, teach their peers with easy explanations, and develop their learning motivation and confidence. Our students make study group plans during their free time (i.e., lunch or dinner time) and break time. Teachers only offer broad guidelines and help students when they need teachers’ advice. By minimizing teacher intervention, we encourage students’ self-determination, responsibility, interpersonal skills as well as overall academic improvement.

Mentoring Program

In general, students in both courses of our school have distinct strong points and weaknesses. First of all, student-athletes have excellent athletic capabilities, but their scholastic performance is low. As for the sports expert students, they get remarkable grades on academic examinations, but their sports skills are not at the professional level. So, as complementary alternatives, our school has implemented a Mentoring Program.

To participate in the Mentoring Program, students voluntarily make pairs consisting of one student from each course. In each pair, the student-athlete teaches and advises the sport expert student about various techniques and theories of his or her own sports event. In turn, the sport expert student teaches academic subjects to his or her partner, the student-athlete.
